Tech and Science (Week of 22.10.12)

TECH INNOVATION
* Scientists are scrambling to find a replacement for silicone, which will run out sooner than later.  Graphene could be used in everything from solar panel(which would double as roofing material too) to cell phones.  Thanks to Nick Bilton at NYTimes.com...the in depth story can be found here:  Bye bye Silicone, hello Graphene?

* With the release of Cloud Atlas, cloning is back in the mainstream news.  Benefits are immense if used properly, and irreversible horror if put in the hands of the corrupt.  We are closer than you may think to deciding if to move forward on cloning.  Thanks to Jeremy Hsu, MSNBC.MSN.com, for outlining the pros and cons.  That article can be found here: To Clone or Not to Clone

DISCOVERIES
* Life on Mars?  Looks to be the case.  Rivers appear and disappear depending on the martian season.  Thanks to Damien Gayle, via dailynews.co.uk. Check that story out here: Mars has Rivers? Far out.

HEALTH
* Land Mines no more?  Mice may be able to sniff out the Mines, which kill tens of thousands every years.  Thanks for this story Tracy Staedter, via news.discovery.com.  Check it out here:  Mice to blow up Land Mines?

* This one sounds far fetched.  At what point would this supercomputer super brain become self aware?  Thanks Barry Neild over at Editions.cnn.com
This out there article can be found here:  Replication of the Human Brain Possible?

HISTORY
* Did we all nearly vanish 70,000 years ago by a super volcano?  You be the judge.  That article is here: Super Volcano 70,000 years ago?
